Yes, I know it's been forever since I've
posted any new photos but with having taken over The Jerseyman and
trying to get my 2013 Battleship Calendar together and ready for
distribution in a few weeks, posting photos here has slid further down
on my ever expanding "To Do List". Going to the ship however still stays
at the top of my list and I've been onboard eight Saturdays since I last
posted any photos, so below are some photos from those visits.
As busy as I am though I still manage to find time to
do some internet surfing and I recently discovered a really cool video
on YouTube that may interest some of you. It's a vintage training film
on firing the ships 16" guns. If you are interested here is the link
where you can view it.

Well, that's about it for this entry, hope
you all have a great Thanksgiving, and in the event that I don't get any
more photos up before the end of the year, let me take this opportunity
now to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year too! By
the way if you're looking for something special for that Battleship
Sailor on your Christmas List, please consider visiting the ships store
where they have some great stocking stuffers. Click

As mentioned in the
last issue of The Jerseyman, we've started a fund raising
campaign to replace the ships teak decking. Estimates to complete
this project
are in the $8M range, we're hoping to raise it $1 at a time from donations
from
our visitors. If you are interested in helping with this effort you too
can
donate at the ships official website, click
here
for more details. |

The Battleship lost a
long-time friend in early October when the ships painter,
Patrick J. McBride, suffered a heart attack and died at the age of 44.
I've
known PJ since 2001 and he was a great guy who always seemed to
have a
smile on his face. The Saturday after he died I arrived onboard with a
heavy
heart and looked for someplace out of the way to spend the day. I
found a
bunch of brass plates that needed some attention on the port side just
aft of
Mount 56 and went to work. The 3 plates shown above were among a dozen
or
so I did that day. At the end of the day, as I often do, I snapped some
photos of
the work I did that day. When I got home and looked at them I saw this
photo. I
hadn't noticed the smiley face painted on the bulkhead while I was there
and was
amazed at what I saw. PJ used to talk about having ghostly encounters
while he
worked throughout the ship and we all used to kid him about it. When I
first saw
this photo I thought maybe it was his way of getting back at me, but in
the end
it's just a smile he left behind for all of us, hope they leave it in
place for a while...
Below is a photo of PJ, covered in paint and smiling, the way I'll
remember him. |

Congratulations to the
Battleship New Jersey Amateur Radio Station
for receiving the above pictured award from the Historic Naval
Ships
Association. The members of the Radio Club have been involved in
restoring
major systems onboard the Battleship since 2001 and this
is a well
deserved honor.
Great job guys and gals of the BNJARS! |
