I was onboard April 16th, and again today, and
also plan to be onboard this Saturday, April 30th.
This Saturday will mark 10 years of volunteering on the Big J for me,
that also means making the trip to NJ 312 times! With a round trip
equal to 320 miles, I'll have driven 99,840 miles in the last 10
years... Did I tell you all I got a new car? No, the ole
Firebird didn't die, but when the odometer turned 185K I decided it was
time for a new car. I bought a new Chevy Camaro convertible, blue
with a black top, guess I'm ready for another 100K miles in the next ten
years!
Now more information about this new
project: the goal is
to have a new tour experience open for visitors around Memorial Day.
That's certainly a tall order, but the progress made in the last few
weeks shows they aren't messing around! The last two weekends the
Brass Team has continued to work on shining things up (and then wrapping
them up to protect them when the painting begins), and the Radio Club
has been working on getting things lit and working in both Forward Main
Battery Plot and Turret #2. The series of photos below takes you
on a walk through the newly open areas along a path that up until a
month ago would have been impossible. In lieu of the usual
individual captions I've provided a short summary of the walk through of
the Turret 2 area you see in the
photos below.
We enter on to the lower shell deck of Turret #2
through a new hole cut in the barbette on the Deck 3 level, just aft of
Sick Bay (see the photo on March 26th showing where the hole was to go).
We then walk about 1/3 of the way around the shell deck and descend down
a new ladder to the extra shell ring (unique to Turret #2 because it sits 1
deck higher then the other two turrets). Then we walk roughly halfway
around the lower shell ring and go through another hole cut through the
barbette which allows us to enter Forward Main Battery Plot, on the Deck
4 level. As we walk around the ring there are several shots
looking down into the powder loading area showing the progress of work
on the new stairs that will take visitors down to that level. A
lot of work remains to be done in the next six weeks or so, anyone
interested in coming down and getting their hands dirty doing some of
it, see you on Saturday.
